Name: Florian
Canon: Tales of the Abyss
Gender: Male
Age: Physically 15, actually 3; he'll have died maybe a month after canon end.
History: Once upon a time, the world's highest religious leader, Fon Master Ion, died. Nobody tried to save him, of course, partly because no-one but the highest-ranking officials knew he was dying and, more importantly, because his death had already been foretold. But Ion was an incredibly useful person to have, and so before he died seven replicas of Fon Master Ion were created. All but the seventh were supposed to be discarded as failures, and indeed they were all thrown into Mt. Zaleho, a volcano, like some sort of burnable trash. But there were two survivors: one was saved by the Commandant Van, and became the God General Sync. The other somehow survived long enough to be found by the high priest, Grand Maestro Mohs, when he came by months later. He was kept safe by Mohs then, as a backup in the event that the 'successful' replica died. Which he did.
After being used by a now-insane Mohs (who had turned into a monster) and his God General companions to read the magical Score that only the now-dead Ion and his replicas had the power to read, the not-so-little boy was abandoned. Luckily, the seventh replica's former guardian, Anise (and her friends) were there at the time; she named him Florian and put him in the care of the church where the replica and original before him had lived. Sadly he didn't do too well at first, being treated differently due to his being not-actually-Ion, and so Anise got her parents to watch over him. He got along very well with the two, and cheerfully passed the days waiting for the day his friends could come visit again.
Personality: This particular Ion replica has the mentality of a small child stuck in a teenage body. Which is exactly what he is. He's energetic and curious, the kind of kid who actively tries to learn about the world around him. When Anise and the gang come to vist him in Daath, he's already raving about stew (which he's only read about) and attempting to play tag (though he gets it mixed up with hide-and-seek).
He's emotionally somewhat vulnerable, too--seeing the way people look at him in Daath (because he looks like Ion) scares him, and when he first entered the church he was hiding behind Anise in fear of all the unfamiliar people and things around him. Despite his wariness, he attaches himself too easily to people; he's easily swayed by a bit of kindness and a friendly voice, and is already noticeably attached to the team the first time they visit him in-game, cheerfully embracing the idea of sleeping together with them and confiding that they're the only ones who don't look at him strangely, which may be a large part of the reason he's so attached to them. With this fondness also comes a cheerful willingness to help out with whatever is asked of him, sometimes even at the cost of personal sacrifice. For example, he gives up a forbidden verse stone, the only memento he has of Mohs and his fellow replicas, for the stated reason that "You come to play with me." Jade, afterwards, says "It was precisely because of his innocence that I expected him to give me the stone unquestioningly if I spoke like that." 'That' referring to his telling Florian he didn't have to force himself to give it up for their sake.
He's also obscenely attached to his name. He's proud of it; it's his pride and joy. Sure he just got it a few months ago or something, but he's Florian and nothing anyone can say can change his mind, beyond brainwashing or the like. The reason for this is because he'd convinced himself that his fellow replicas' deaths were because they'd had no names: they'd simply existed, without any sense of belonging. It is also because of this - because Anise gave him at sense of belonging - that he became so attached to her, and trusts her as a small child might trust a parent or older sibling.
Powers/Abilities: Florian is technically able to use fonic artes, and is technically a seventh fonist, the rarest of all kinds of fonists. Technically, because his body isn't actually strong enough to keep up spells for very long, making him pretty useless in that respect. He's got very good survival instincts though, as can be evidenced from his surviving off mice and weeds in a volcano for who knows how long.
Also, he has all the knowledge of Fon Master Ion, and none of the understanding to go with it, meaning he knows a lot of words, but doesn't necessarily recognize the connotations behind them.
Keepsakes/Mementos:
- his forbidden verse stone (which is small and kind of useless by itself)
- a toy ball
Sample: He'd been playing around, as usual: running through the halls, chasing a ball, trying to dodge priests and people when he happened to come across them. It wasn't quite as fun, playing by himself. But there wasn't anyone to play with, today - everyone was busy with something or other. Of course by "everyone" what he mostly meant was "Anise and her parents." After all this time he still wasn't completely comfortable with the priests, however hard he...
Well, alright, he hadn't really tried very hard in that respect. But it wasn't like anyone had pushed him to try, either, which was a good enough reason for him not to bother. When would Anise have time to play? he wondered, as he made distracted attempts to kick his ball through the tunnel he'd made of a bunch of lined-up chairs. Or if Anise couldn't play, maybe Pamela, or Oliver, or...or maybe Luke and everybody could come visit, and they'd play hide and seek--oh, but Luke couldn't come anymore, could he? Anise had sounded really sad when she'd told him that. He'd been sad too, of course: Luke had been fun to play with, for however short a time they'd known each other.
Another kick - he hadn't bothered to count how many tries there'd been but this would be the 257th one - and he actually saw success, watching the ball roll smoothly through the chairs, past the table, and.....out the previously-closed door, just as someone walked in.
"Wait, come back!"
The priest blinked in surprise, about to question if Florian had been referring to him, but the boy was already out the door, chasing after his ball as it bounced off a wall and into the path of another priest, who tripped and sent both himself and the ball flying as a snowfall of (probably) important papers came down to obscure Florian's view. Of course, this only spurred him on faster, rushing through the paper storm, slipping on a loose document, tripping towards the balcony railing, still trying to reach out to that bright red dot ahead--
It wasn't until he'd grabbed hold of his prize, grinning in victory, that his brain finally registered the sound of screams. And it was another moment (much shorter in reality than it seemed in his head) that he realized...he was falling. As he slowly turned in the air, looking down (up?) at the quickly receding faces far above(?) his feet, he couldn't help but wonder what was going to happen next. Would he keep falling forever? Would someone come to save him? Maybe he'd turn into a cheagle and fly away, like Mieu. The ball slipped out of his grasp as he tried to understand what was happening, what was going to happen, the ball was getting farther and farther away, the faces up above him were staring, staring, screaming, running, he wanted Anise, Anise would save him, he just had to call her name...
"...An--"
A sudden bolt of pain--and everything went black.
Mindset: Florian will remember falling, but quick as it was, and young as he is, it won't quite register as death. He'll be confused about his new surroundings, and as nervous as he usually is in an unfamiliar place with unfamiliar people, but will adapt to it quickly enough.
G̶̶l̨͡i̵͢t̷c͝͠h̕é͠s̷̷͡: Of all the terrible things that have happened throughout Florian's life so far, what's bothered him most is the stares he's gotten from the priests and other members of the church at Daath. Awkward stares, frightened stares, curious stares--you get a lot of different reactions from people when you're a clone of the pope. He's also afraid of the concept of permanently losing those close to him, particularly Anise.
