Canon: Tales of the Abyss
Canon Point: Post-canon
History: Wiki!
Personality:
Florian is a child in a teenage body, or to put it more accurately, a teenager with the life experience of a child. Despite the troubles he's gone through he's still energetic and curious, the kind of kid who actively tries to learn about the world around him. When Anise and the gang come to visit him in Daath, he's already raving about stew (which he's only read about) and attempting to play tag (though he gets it mixed up with hide-and-seek). He's curious, he's energetic, he's full of life--he might actually be the most cheerful of all the Ion replicas, if only because he's the only one who'd actually been given the freedom to find anything to be cheerful about.
Having survived on his own for the first few months of his young life, he can be surprisingly stubborn (one might even say brave) for the sake of survival, and without a proper education or upbringing he might even be a little wild at times (with no qualms over eating live mice or running at top-speed through a church). That doesn't mean he's particularly brave, however. While he can kindasorta handle wilderness survival, and probably isn't too afraid of anything he knows can't kill him, he's emotionally rather vulnerable--seeing the way people look at him in Daath (because he looks like Ion) scares him, and when he first entered the church he was hiding behind Anise in fear of all the unfamiliar people and things around him. He's more frightened of judging stares than of monsters, able to talk about Mohs without any hesitation but shrinking away from those people in Daath who can't hide whatever conflicting feelings they may have about the Ion replica.
Despite his wariness, he attaches himself too easily to people; he's easily swayed by a bit of kindness and a friendly voice, and is already noticeably attached to the team the first time they visit him in-game, cheerfully embracing the idea of sleeping together with them and confiding that they're the only ones who don't look at him strangely (which may be a big reason for the easy attachment, honestly). With this fondness also comes a cheerful willingness to help out with whatever is asked of him, sometimes even at the cost of personal sacrifice. For example, he gives up a forbidden verse stone, the only memento he has of Mohs and his fellow replicas, for the stated reason that "You come to play with me." Jade, afterwards, says "It was precisely because of his innocence that I expected him to give me the stone unquestioningly if I spoke like that." (He told Florian he didn't have to force himself to give it up for their sake, which in turn pressured him into wanting to give it up for their sake. Mind tricks!)
Also, having started without even a name he could call his own, and having only really found happiness after Anise gave him one, Florian has convinced himself that his fellow replicas' deaths were because they'd had no names: they'd simply existed, without any sense of belonging. It is also because of this - because Anise gave him that sense of belonging - that he became so attached to her, and trusts her as a small child might trust a parent or older sibling. He treasures the things people give him more than anything he might pick up himself, and will happily show them off to anyone who asks. Because he actually has things he can share! And there's actually people he can share them with! And honestly that's all he really needs to appreciate life.

[Florian has been wandering around Yun’Ashia, peeking in shops, attempting to climb trees, stalking bugs through the grass, the usual thing. He might have even run into one of you wonderful fellow adventurers, it's a definite possibility! And then sometime this afternoon, after a good few hours of running around, he sits down on the ground somewhere and asks an important question on Mognet:]
I just thought of something...how do you know what you're not supposed to eat? Like, you can eat spinach but you shouldn't eat bugs. [A pause.] ...Don't birds eat bugs though? Maybe I could try one after all!
[His moogle isn't visible on-screen but judging by his voice he's probably frantically waving as he says "No, no bugs! And no more flowers either!" He pouts.] Aww, why not? You won't share your kupo nuts either! Maybe I should get that Gore...Gum...that one cooking job! Then it'll be okay, right? [No! No it is--well alright technically that might make it okay but that is not the point--]
2.
It's strange, he thinks, as he listens to his moogle try to explain something he'd only half been paying attention to. Strange that...what? That he's alone? But he's been alone before - in his room, in the church halls, in a volcano. That Anise isn't here? But she's rarely ever here, busy as she is with saving the world....maybe what's strange is that he isn't here. There? He's not there anymore. Will Anise worry when she gets back and find him missing? He's not as strong as Anise is, and he didn't leave a note or anything when he came here.
Maybe he can write her a letter from here. Pamela and Oliver got letters sometimes, he remembers. He could find a piece of paper and write, let's see... "Dear Anise and Pamela and Oliver, I'm okay. There aren't any cheagles here, but I think I can get my own Tokunaga someday. Love, Florian." That sounds good, right? Yeah, that sounds good. Maybe he could give it to those guys from the ship! Then they could deliver it, and then nobody will be worried, and then--and then--
And then Tokupon knocks on his head. "You didn't hear a thing I said, did you?" Florian covers his head with both hands despite the lack of pain, giving his companion a slightly put-out look. "You were talking about work, right? But we're just going to go help the chocobos, and you were talking for a really long time!" "That's no reason to start daydreaming! You must know the proper care and maintenance of a chocobo before you can really work with one!" The replica looks up at the moogle for a moment, face flickering between a pout and a smile before deciding to just break into a run instead. "Come on, let's go, I'll race you to the stables!"
He laughs at the confused shouting behind him, reveling in the feel of wind against his face, forgetting what he'd been thinking about just a minute before. After all, there's things to do and games to play, and he's got a friend to do them with. And there's not much more important than that right now, is there?
