Personality:
The simplest overall summary of Xie Lian would be that comic of the dog sitting in a fire saying "This is fine". After 800 years of being the world's unluckiest hobo, you could say it's become his main way of coping: He's tenacious, described in canon as being able to last three days on a single meal and get right up to collect junk immediately after being beaten up ten times. This isn't to say that he's physically resistant to pain, or that he's deaf to jeers and insults—rather, he's mentally able to compartmentalize the problem to a point that he can ignore it. It's fine, he says! He's experienced worse before! He's not lying about that, either. It's because of experience that he's become a particularly flexible person, as willing to sleep in a cave as he is to sleep in a feather bed, as willing to eat moldy bread off the floor as he is to eat a feast prepared just for him. He has incredibly low standards when it comes to his own safety and comfort, and is genuinely grateful for whatever little comforts he can manage to obtain. (He's also become a super saver, buying himself the cheapest single set of clothes and choosing to camp out rather than pay for an inn.)
The impression he tends to give off because of this is that of someone always smiling, always cheerful, always looking on the bright side of things. After all, nothing seems to get him down! He's always been a bleeding heart anyway, the guy willing to risk getting trampled to save a small child, or endure living with a cousin he hates for the sake of a nephew he doesn't, or...fight to protect a guy who really doesn't need the help. Being a martial god, he also has a tendency to lean towards fighting his way to victory rather than planning his way out of problems, so maybe sometimes his attempts at helping could've been thought out a little better.....He never outgrew that childhood desire to help, and his years of not-actually-dying have only served to make it worse, often throwing himself in harm's way on instinct with no regard to his own personal safety. Despite the low standards he holds for himself, he'll put all his effort into making sure anyone under his protection is well-cared-for. Got guests? Feed 'em! The team's being threatened into a death pit of ultimate doom? Volunteer to jump in first! He also has a soft spot for children, and will spend hard-earned money just to dress them up or give them snacks if he gets the chance.
Sometimes though, he'll show a little of something else underneath all that kindness--the occasional rude remark, worded politely; the occasional pulling the blanket off his cousin to give to the kids instead; the occasional silent approval of someone getting put through a hard time. Loving as he is, he's long since learned that you need to be tough to survive in this world, something that becomes apparent the more you get on his bad side. (It's very hard to get on his bad side, for the record.) He's perfectly happy to give a laundry list of complaints at the same time that he's defending one of his best friends, or politely imply that someone's maybe a little slow in the head while talking in their general vicinity. The general rule is that he'll be polite to everyone regardless of rank or status, but the only people he'll always be on good behavior for are people he really seriously respects. Really it's just people he dislikes that aren't his superiors that are in danger of coming under fire; he wasn't raised to be rude, and even if he's loosened up over the years, it's still a relatively rare sight to see (unless you're his cousin). He's perfectly willing to stand up against those he thinks are in the wrong though, regardless of their position, and while he's unlikely to cause a scene if he can avoid it, that doesn't mean he isn't willing to if necessary.
All that aside, deep down he's also hiding a whole lot of pain, which manifests as a general inability to love himself. He accepts any pain he receives as inevitable, treats any humiliation as ignorable, and barely shows any concern for his own well-being. Just as he'd rather put himself through suffering than allow others to be hurt, he'd also rather endure pain than allow it to cause trouble for others; having already lost everything he ever loved, it's become habit for him to live his days as someone with nothing left to lose.
CRAU developments: During his time in Prismatica, Xie Lian learned to be more free with casual physical affection, and is much more prone to casual touches, handholding, and the like where is old self would likely have considered such behavior improper. He also learned to open up a little more to other people in terms of his own emotions, and even ended up in a romantic relationship during his stay there. (Also he has permanent floppy black bunny ears now.)
Key themes: Perseverance, Never losing yourself. No matter what hardships Xie Lian went through, he never gave up, and never gave in to despair; despite everything, he continued to dispense help and advice wherever he could to whoever he met.
Main Motivation: Helping others in what little ways he can.
Skills:
- A master of martial arts, both swordfighting and hand-to-hand combat
- Immortal (not invincible though, sadly)
- Advanced healing rates
- Above-average senses (hearing, vision, danger senses, etc)
- Superhuman strength and speed, too
- Can draw defensive magical spells (protection circles, evil-repelling talismans, etc.)
- Can make a qiankun bag/sleeve/pocket (basically hammerspace)
- Can see ghosts
- Extreme bad luck
Bonus list of things he doesn't have enough mp to do without someone to recharge his battery:
- Soul Swap: he can switch bodies with a spiritually powerful person, or his soul can ride along in their body and basically share control of it--and if he's low on power then it's just the riding along without any ability to control.
- Can animate statues!
- Knows a spell to weight himself down!
- Palm Torch (as the name implies, it's a little floating flame to help light up the room.)
- Communication arrays, the heavenly equivalent of discord chat! It basically works like telepathic communication, only with a lot more passwords involved.
Item: Mantou the chickitten
Sample: Ancient
Notes: For the fun of it, what if his Prisma mooncycles are messed up but not entirely canceled out by being in the void, so he could be affected at random times...effects include change of temperament (becoming more affectionate/protective/generous), accelerated regeneration, extremely minor electric powers, and a higher tolerance for physical pain.
