CHARACTER INFORMATION
Character Name: Nakigitsune
Age: 900+
Canon: Touken Ranbu
Canon Point: Post-Hanamaru
Character Information: Incredibly short historical background | Game profile | Anime episode summaries in which Nakigitsune gets up to nothing of importance

Personality: Nakigitsune is described in the official Touken Ranbu twitter as a taciturn boy who lets his accompanying fox relay most of his feelings. This can be easily noticed in-game and throughout the anime, mangas, novel, etc; the unnamed fox speaks practically everything in his stead, with Nakigitsune himself simply offering supporting comments most of the time. His refusal to speak isn't due to any lack of emotion or dislike of company - having been kept as a display piece for all the centuries he's existed (passed down through a rich family and then on to a museum), he has had little to no experience with not just people, but most things in the outside world. Because of this, he has trouble wording his thoughts out loud, or figuring out how to answer people in private conversation. (Following others is easier; he gets stage fright having to sing solo in one of the comics, but is perfectly happy to sing along with the group in both that and the anime.) His habit of wearing a mask only adds to the sense of distance he gives off, making the fox useful both as a voice and as a sort of icebreaker (He honestly enjoys the surprise he gets when people realize the fox can talk).

Nakigitsune can also be considered to be rather naive, due to his never having gone outside, let alone experienced the battles that most of the other swords have, prior to their Tourabu adventures. (He doesn't get to experience battle during canon either, his only appearances in the manga/anime/anywhere tending to revolve around shenanigans in the safety of the citadel.) His fox describes him as getting easily attached to anyone with a fox-related name, for example - it's easier for him to reach out to people when he feels some sort of connection with them, and inexperienced as he is in the ways of the world, the subject of foxes is one of the easiest things for him to connect with. Aside from the easy attachment, he also gets anxious when left alone, the fox worriedly wondering aloud where their master has gone if left idle for a certain period of time, and reminding them not to forget him when he gets sent off on expeditions. Interestingly enough though, he's not actually all that shy: the few lines he speaks himself hold no hesitation, and while he rarely ever has anything to contribute to the conversation, he's not afraid to say what few words he has. While he rarely says more than a short "yes" or "that's right" due to the fox usually saying everything for him, he's perfectly capable of expressing his own feelings through action and the occasional word: he's seen showing open enjoyment at tasty food, getting noticeably scared at the prospect of getting caught breaking rules, and smiling happily in the company of good friends.

Of course, Nakigitsune isn't entirely defined by his refusal to speak properly. He's an honest, loyal, and hardworking person, as evidenced by the general tone of his lines: the fox describes him as working hard in all the available household chores (farmwork, horsekeeping, sparring) while the fox itself does nothing of use (because it's a fox). He shows an active interest in doing well on the battlefield as well, responding positively when the fox cheers him on in battle (in the only line where he actually says anything in battle). He's shown in the anime and various comics to get along well with his fellow swords, trying his best to speak when he has to (though public speaking is still difficult on his own), and helping his fellow Awataguchi swords without ever asking anything in return (or letting them know he helped). He happily goes along with his comrades' antics as well, joining along when Hasebe starts singing, dressing up when the others decide to play host club, etc. He's not a perfect goody two-shoes by any means, though, and will happily sneak snacks or play a harmless trick on his friends ("were you surprised?") or let himself get dragged along into other little distractions - as long as they're not on a battlefield or something, of course. If nobody's specifically said they can't then it's fine, right?

One last note is that, as the spirit of a sword - and one which had incredibly limited contact with the outside world - Nakigitsune may not necessarily have the best grasp of human societal or moral rules. While it's true that he has a friendly disposition and zero battlefield experience, he is at heart a weapon of war, and therefore has both the inborn ability to wield a blade and the willingness to cut down whatever he's tasked to kill; not bloodthirsty, but definitely okay with killing someone if commanded. The comics and anime all show a variety of examples in which they show no hesitation in cutting down their enemies, and may even show enjoyment in the act of battle (though due to the nature of the plot, they aren't allowed to kill humans and do their best to avoid that). The ones who show the most worry or regret over it tend to be those with more violent or tragic pasts, and even then it depends on the sword. There are often scenes in which they get attached to creatures that aren't on their target list, or run from opponents which - again - they don't actually need to battle...but when it comes down to it, cutting things is what they were born to do. Even the religious and peace-loving swords show a love of sparring, and can be dangerous when needed. It's as easy as breathing, if rather more fun and not quite as necessary. As a sword who was never taken outside, spending all his time on display stands or in storage, Nakigitsune has never had the opportunity to gain a particularly deep appreciation of humanity, or to feel any sort of loyalty for anyone outside of his previous owners or current companions, and would probably hesitate more over cutting down a wild fox or needlessly breaking an object (like a sword) than killing a stranger on the street.
