name: Chu Wenshan
canon: Have You Seen My Brother
age: ~22
canon point: Post-canon
history: Chu Wenshan was born as the only son and heir of a reasonably well-known clan in the jianghu (basically the martial arts side of China). When he was still young, his parents also picked up an orphaned infant, and upon being told this would be his brother from now on, he took the news so much to heart that his entire world now revolved around his little brother Wuyou; he chose to take up the sword because he overheard Wuyou saying swordsmen were cool, he insisted on inheriting the clan alone because he'd noticed that Wuyou seemed more interested in books than fighting, he'd watch over Wuyou all night whenever he got sick...the problem being that he never properly explained his actions or worded more than he thought was necessary, leading Wuyou to foster a growing resentment towards him. This resentment ended in the ultimate betrayal when Chu Wenshan(?) apparently decided on a whim to raze the entire compound, killing various sect members and leaving Wuyou hanging off a cliff before Chu Wenshan(!) came back to shatter Wuyou's precious jade pendant in front of his eyes and then throw him off that same cliff.

Years later, Chu Wenshan, the Lone Shadow Swordsman, number four on the ranking list of greatest martial artists in the jianghu...trips in a doorway and gets amnesia. It is conveniently not long after this that he receives a ransom note claiming to have his little brother hostage; and so, despite not knowing who his brother is or whether he even truly has a brother, Chu Wenshan sets out on an adventure to rescue the only family he can be reasonably certain he has. Unbeknownst to him, however, it was his brother who actually wrote that ransom note; this brother, now named Ouyang Duyu, has become the leader of a sect of his own in the years they were apart, and upon learning that the target of his revenge doesn't remember having a brother to begin with, he finds an excuse to start traveling together with him as his "personal doctor" in order to recover Chu Wenshan's memories, and then exact revenge...this is a journey which consists of a lot of wacky hijinks in the process of uncovering the truth behind the defeat of the Chu clan, the secret force behind the truth behind the defeat of the Chu clan, the even more secret threat behind that force—and it won't be until the very end that these two brothers ever clear up their misunderstanding.
abilities: Chu Wenshan is a swordsman/martial artist who is strong enough to swing wooden pillars around like they're baseball bats and uproot iron barred gates from the ground without breaking a sweat. The strongest blow a human being could possibly give to his head leaves zero damage, he has such a dog-like sense of smell that he can smell poison described as "tasteless and scentless", he can fight just as well blind as he can with his eyes open, and he has extremely powerful lung strength to top it all off. Like all Chinese fictional characters, he also has qi abilities, though in this case it acts more like an automatic shield/immune system, making him more-or-less immune to poison and helping to act as an extra layer of hardness for his body in battle (see the aforementioned blows to his head). Conversely, while poison has failed to affect him in any of the ways it's supposed to, it can cause his qi to go into overdrive, thus messing up his meridians and causing various issues like dizziness, temporary loss of senses, nosebleeds, or amnesia.
personality: Chu Wenshan is, in many ways, an idiot savant. He's an inhumanly strong fighter, but his logic is questionable at the best of times, he such a one-track mind that he forgot he had amnesia immediately upon learning that he had a kidnapped brother, he thinks violence is the answer to most problems, and he's particularly easy to trick, trusting everyone he meets by default unless they prove themselves otherwise. This isn't to say he's a total idiot, but he is bad at reading or judging people, a fact not at all helped by a severe case of face blindness.

All this aside, he's also a very caring, loyal, and protective person, who puts the safety of others over his own health, and has been shown to do such things as throwing himself off a cliff for an item belonging to a brother he doesn't remember, or fighting with a knife stuck in his back because he's afraid the blood that would appear if he pulled it out might frighten his companion (who also happens to be his brother). This kindness doesn't stretch only to friends and family, however; he stands up for Ouyang Duyu before the man ever starts traveling with him, and at one point saves his opponents from a collapsing building despite them having tried to kill both him and his partner that same hour. He fights for good, and while his idea of good is a small, personal thing rather than some greater sense of justice, he still holds to that with the same unwavering loyalty that he holds towards a brother he neither knows nor remembers: family is family, and therefore worth more than all the riches on the planet.

One last thing to note about him is that the combination of love and stupidity means that he is extremely bad at talking or explaining himself in situations where the people he cares about would really benefit from knowing what the heck he's doing, leading to a wide array of situations in which he says one thing and absolutely no one correctly guesses what he meant. Oftentimes he'll think of an answer in his head and then say whatever comes next, or say a descriptor (like "weak" or "troublesome") and fail to specify who exactly he's describing; in summary, he's extremely blunt and to the point, but his tendency not to mince words is made into a problem when he fails to consider that certain words or phrases could potentially sound malicious or inappropriate in a different context.

(As a second "one last thing", his personality and behavior don't change at all upon regaining his memory, and the one truly noticeable thing he learns over the course of the entire canon is that he occasionally needs to voice the second half of his thought out loud instead of leaving his brother to make wild guesses again.)
