[series]: Angel's Doubt
[character]: Riku
[character history / background]: Once upon a time, there was a high-ranking noble family by the name of Caluanthes. This family had four sons: the first was a very charismatic man, the second was smart and able, the third was of no importance, and the fourth...the fourth was a bird of paradise, in all the most negative ways. Having gained a reputation as rude, outlandish, always dressed flamboyantly and not very diligent at all, Fourth Caluanthes would be the last person any self-respecting noble would ever want to associate with.

Riku is Fourth's beloved servant, following him wherever he goes and doing whatever he bids, as any proper servant should. Though sadly he's incompetent enough not to be particularly helpful at all. Nevertheless, Riku has been in Fourth's personal employ for so very long that he can tell his moods where others can't, and can answer his questions satisfactorily and without hesitation. During Fourth's latest adventure - a gourmet dining tour thinly disguised as an "international learning experience" - he bumps into the popular noble Eiri Lawrence, someone much more well-mannered than the higher-ranked Fourth, and accidentally connects the two nobles by way of common courtesy: Eiri offers him a towel to dry off, as he'd fallen into the lake, and Fourth comes by later to return it, in order not to have any obligations.

This connection grows deeper by the day, as Eiri becomes interested in both the master and his servant, and Riku begins running into him a lot more often on his adventures around various towns. Eventually they find themselves traveling on the same train, in the same compartment, heading for the same destination: Galancia, a mining town whose young lord is desperate to profit from Eiri's patronage. Having been invited by the older of the two lords, and having learned that Eiri is planning to help them, Riku and Fourth spend the next few days together with them at the Galancia lords' manor.
[character abilities]: Riku has the gift of enhanced eyesight (able to recognize the feather patterns of a far-off bird flying at full speed) and a photographic memory, along with the artistic ability to make exact reproductions of everything he says, whether through drawing or with origami. His paper-folding skill is such that Eiri compares it to counterfeiting, as the creations he makes really do look exactly like the flowers or silver or whatever objects he's mimicking - though in the end they're only colored paper at most.

Almost as if to make up for this gift, he also has the gift of incredibly bad luck. He's constantly falling into rivers/ponds/lakes, getting knocked over by random falling objects, and admits to constantly drawing blanks in the lottery, as well as having once been attacked by bees. Luckily (as we've always got to think of the bright side of things) it's never so bad that he gets seriously injured; just scrapes and bruises and soaking wet clothes, it seems.
[character personality]: Riku is a cheerful kid, the kind still full of innocent wonder at how big and wide this small world is after all. He's fascinated by absolutely everything, from birds to flowers to a hole in the wall, and is airheaded enough that these are exactly the kinds of things he will point out to you when asked to give a tour of the town. He's gullible, too--whatever anyone tells him, he'll believe right away, like when he learns that ships are horrendous accidents just waiting to happen, or that Eiri Lawrence is actually a demon named Eileen. Fourth's words are more believable than others' though, and so his words will be taken over the other's even if it's entirely wrong.

He's honest, helpful, and friendly, too: if somebody helps him out he'll thank them with a handmade present, and will even go make a new one if the first present happens to have gotten a little messed up in whatever accident they helped him out of. If somebody he likes just happens to want more stuff, well, he'll go ahead and make it - which is why Fourth is constantly running around covered in Riku's handmade feathers and flowers and who knows what else. He's stubborn, too, in a sad sort of way--he'll apologize with all the apologetic feelings a human can muster if he's the one in the wrong, and will attempt to make up for it even if a string of horribly unlucky accidents happens to him before he even finishes apologizing. Which is actually very often, considering how bad his luck happens to be. He's also stubborn enough to hold onto his cheerful outlook on life despite that total lack of luck.

Lastly, despite his honest personality, Riku is actually rather good at keeping secrets. Throughout his interactions with Eiri, not once does he let slip any personal information about Fourth or himself. He's an expert at giving incredibly silly answers to questions, or answering them with yet more questions. This is only partly because he knows what not to say; the questions are real questions, and his answers, while silly, are still technically correct. But despite all appearances he does know how far not to go when it comes to talking about certain subjects. This doesn't mean he knows what not to say about anything else, though: he's entirely able to ruin important conversations with the wrong comment at the wrong time. It's only on these topics that he knows how to be vague, and really they're the only things he'll ever be vague on. Everything else is fair game.
[point in timeline you're picking your character from]: Chapter 4/on the train to Galancia

[journal post]: [There's a dirty, wet and slightly ragged face on the network today, smiling hopefully at the camera as if he hadn't just fallen in the fountain ten minutes ago.]

Um, excuse me everybody, but I've got a really important question to ask! Have any of you seen Fourth? I've been looking around for a while now, and I can't find him anywhere. He's a little taller than me[motioning a little above his head], and he's got black hair, and...he's really cool! So cool you get enraptured, he's just that amazing. So you'll definitely know him if you see him. He was wearing lots of lace too, and we were on a train...

...Does anyone know where the train went? I don't remember getting off of it...and I don't think I'm dreaming because I've never seen any of these things before. But someone said I could talk to people with this, so I guess there's a lot of people seeing me right now. Maybe one of you can help! I really--

[It's at this point he gets hit in the head with a stick and drops his communicator. The last things you can hear before it cuts out are the sound of barking and profuse apologies.]
[third person / log sample]: There comes a time in every man's life when he looks back at himself and thinks, "I've totally positively absolutely messed this up." Like forgetting an anniversary, or accidentally dropping the dog off a cliff after promising to walk it for a friend.

It seemed that Riku had finally come across a dilemma like this as he stooped by the side of the road, frantically attempting to coax a waterlogged, dilapidated cake back into its box. It had looked so delicious when he saw it in the bakery window earlier, and he'd had just enough money to buy it, and he'd thought Fourth would like a bite, and now--well, he couldn't be blamed for the weather having suddenly taken a turn for the rainy on his way back home, and it's not like he'd expected that dog to run by just as he was attempting to avoid that particularly large mud puddle. Then the puddle had turned out to be more slippery than he'd expected, and he'd just happened to be standing on a hill at the time, and...he stared down at the cake, now safely shoved back into its rather soggy box, and absent-mindedly licked his fingers. It was still pretty delicious, even if it was wet, and somehow really the only damage it had sustained so far (aside from loss of shape) was the rain still pouring down from overhead. Maybe once he got back he could try to fix it up a bit, and nobody would notice the difference? But then again, he could never give Fourth something so messed-up, it had to be as perfect as Fourth was himself! But it did taste really--

It was at this point he realized, belatedly, that he hadn't closed the box properly, and that he'd been daydreaming next to a mud puddle just big enough for that passing carriage to have splashed him (and the cake) with it.

...Maybe Fourth would like a paper cake. Those icing decorations had looked so pretty, all swirls and flowers and maybe he could decorate Fourth's hat like that actually. Yes, that would be beautiful, a hat covered in all those pretty designs...though he could make them look like real flowers instead of icing ones, and the swirls could be silver maybe, instead of white, and of course the ca--hat couldn't be pink, he didn't think Fourth had any pink suits to go with a pink hat. He smiled to himself at the idea, forgetting the horribly muddy state he was now in, and hurried back to the house in much lighter spirits than he'd had a moment ago, soggy cakebox still in hand. He could think of what to do with that once he got back home to Fourth.
